Two reasons. The road to Besisahar is a winding eight-hour drive that drops you at 760m, followed by six days of approach walking before the real trek begins. And the Marsyangdi valley road itself is rough, landslide-prone, and fundamentally incompatible with a luxury itinerary. The helicopter lift from Kathmandu to Manang takes under two hours, includes a Himalayan scenic flight as a bonus, and leaves you with time and energy for the high-altitude section that actually defines the circuit.

What happens on the Annapurna Circuit Luxury Trek if Thorong La is closed by snow or weather?

Thorong La closes occasionally in late autumn and early spring after heavy snowfall. Our senior guides monitor weather and pass conditions daily, and we make the decision in Thorong Phedi the evening before crossing. If the pass is genuinely unsafe, we descend back to Manang and arrange a helicopter evacuation to Pokhara with a scenic flight over the Annapurna Sanctuary. You do not lose the luxury experience — you lose the specific satisfaction of the crossing itself. We do not risk guest safety for a summit photograph.

The Annapurna Base Camp landing is weather-dependent, as all high-altitude helicopter landings are. Our landing success rate is approximately 85% across the spring and autumn seasons, with higher rates in October and November when skies are most stable. If the weather prevents landing, the helicopter still flies the Sanctuary loop at low altitude and then descends to Pokhara. We do not refund the landing attempt — aircraft, pilot, and flight time are deployed regardless — but we tell you honestly in the morning whether conditions look good.

Thorong Phedi at 4,450m is basic by physical necessity — plumbing does not survive winter at that altitude — but rooms are private, and the dining room is warm. Muktinath at 3,800m returns to full luxury standard with private bathrooms, hot showers, and heated rooms.

The Pokhara rest day also gives your body and joints a chance to recover before the flight home. If you have only 9 days, we would rather recommend a different itinerary than compromise this one.

Cardiovascular fitness equivalent to walking five to six hours a day on uneven terrain, carrying a light daypack, at moderate altitude. Pass day requires eight to nine hours of walking with 1,000m of climbing and 1,600m of descent at the top altitudes of the trek. Regular hiking, stair climbing, or gym cardio in the three months before departure makes a significant difference. Age matters less than fitness — our oldest Thorong La guest was 72, our youngest 14. Both crossed without difficulty because both had trained.
