I'm 61 and was worried about the climb. We started at 7:30, took the horses to the halfway cafeteria, and walked the rest slowly with plenty of photo stops. Standing in the monastery where the crowds hadn't yet arrived was worth every step. The hot-stone bath that evening was the right reward.

The dzong at the river confluence is the most beautiful building I have seen anywhere in Asia. But the memory I keep is the walk to the little chorten above the rice terraces, and lunch in a farmhouse where the chillies were drying on the roof. Nothing felt staged.
