Bhutan Black-Necked Crane Festival Tour
The Black-Necked Crane Festival is one of Bhutan's most unique cultural events. Held annually on November 11 in the courtyard of the 17th-century Gangtey Goenpa, the festival celebrates the arrival of the rare black-necked cranes that migrate from the Tibetan Plateau to winter in the Phobjikha Valley. Local children and monks perform the poetic "Crane Dance" in tribute to the birds, and the entire valley community gathers for traditional games and celebrations.
This eight-day tour is timed entirely around the festival. Begin in Thimphu with the Buddha Dordenma and the Zorig Chusom school of traditional arts. Cross the Dochula Pass to Punakha for the magnificent Punakha Dzong. Drive into the high-altitude wetlands of Phobjikha to walk the Gangtey Nature Trail and attend the festival. Return to Paro for a private archery session and conclude with the pilgrimage hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery.
