EBC has the name. The words “Everest Base Camp” carry cultural weight that “Gokyo Lakes” does not. If standing at the foot of Mount Everest is your lifelong goal, do EBC. But if your goal is the most visually striking, least crowded, most colorful landscape in the Khumbu — five turquoise lakes, the longest glacier in Nepal, and four of the six highest peaks on earth in a single sunrise panorama — Gokyo is the better trek.

The Lodges: What to Expect
Lukla to Namche: MLN luxury lodges. Electric blankets. En-suite bathrooms. Hot showers. Spa at Namche. Chef-prepared organic meals. This section is identical to the EBC luxury trek — the same lodges, the same quality.
Above Namche (Dole, Machhermo, Gokyo): the Gokyo valley does not have MLN lodges. Accommodation is upgraded teahouse standard: private rooms, attached bathrooms (most), gas heaters, thick quilts.
The food is simpler. We deploy the same enhancements as our Mardi Himal program: a dedicated cook team with fresh ingredients portered daily, premium sleeping bags with silk liners, hot water bottles, down jackets, and daily pulse-oximeter monitoring.
For extremely fit, experienced trekkers, the Cho La Pass (5,368m) connects the Gokyo valley to the EBC trail at Dzongla. This allows a combined Gokyo + EBC itinerary in 16-18 days. The pass is technical: steep ice and rock, crampons required, weather-dependent, guide-assessed go/no-go decision on the morning of the crossing.
We offer this only to guests with prior high-altitude trekking experience and verified fitness. It is not a luxury add-on. It is a day of mountaineering in a trekking itinerary.

When to Trek
Autumn (October-November): the definitive season. Clearest skies. The lakes are at their most turquoise (glacial melt is highest after summer). Gokyo Ri sunrise is most reliable. Stable weather for helicopter operations. Spring (March-May): warmer. Rhododendron blooms on the lower trail.
Slightly more afternoon cloud at altitude. Winter (December-February): very cold at Gokyo (well below -15°C at night). Spectacular clarity. Nearly empty trail. Expert cold-weather gear essential. Monsoon (June-September): clouds obscure views. The trail is wet. Not recommended except for the Janai Purnima pilgrimage (August).
Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the Gokyo trek?
- Hard. Same difficulty as EBC. Maximum 5,357m (Gokyo Ri). 10-12 days. 5-7 hours walking per day. The ascent of Gokyo Ri on Day 8 is steep and exposed (2.5-3 hours in the dark). Requires good fitness and prior walking experience. Porters carry everything.
Do I see Everest from Gokyo Ri?
- Yes. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu are all visible from the Gokyo Ri summit (5,357m). Four of the world’s six highest peaks in a single panorama. The view is wider than Kala Patthar’s, though Kala Patthar is closer to Everest itself.
What are the lakes like?
- Five glacial lakes at 4,650-4,990m. Turquoise color from glacial mineral sediment (rock flour). Sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. The third lake (Dudh Pokhari) is the most famous: the deepest turquoise, with Cho Oyu reflected on calm mornings. The fifth is the most remote and rarely visited.
Are there luxury lodges at Gokyo?
- Not yet. MLN luxury lodges cover the route from Lukla to Namche (with electric blankets, en-suite bathrooms, a spa, and chef-prepared meals). Above Namche, accommodation is upgraded to a teahouse. We deploy a dedicated cook team, premium sleeping bags, hot water bottles, and daily medical monitoring.
How much does a luxury Gokyo trek cost?
- $3,500-5,500/person for a 12-day luxury trek with MLN lodges (Lukla-Namche), enhanced teahouse above, private guide, porters, all meals, permits, and helicopter return from Lukla. Helicopter extraction from Gokyo adds $2,250/person (private charter split).
Can I combine Gokyo with EBC?
- Yes, via the Cho La Pass (5,368m). 16-18 days total. Technical pass crossing: crampons, steep ice, guide-assessed go/no-go. Only for experienced high-altitude trekkers. This is not a luxury add-on — it is a mountaineering day.
What permits do I need?
Sagarmatha National Park entry: $30. TIMS card: $15-25. Both arranged by us. No restricted area permits.
Is Gokyo suitable for families or seniors?
- The altitude (max 5,357m) and duration (10-12 days) make Gokyo challenging for families with children and seniors. Fit adults aged 50-65 with prior trekking experience can attempt it with a leisurely pace and rest days. For guests who want the Gokyo lakes without the trek, the scenic helicopter tour provides aerial views in a single day.
What is the Ngozumpa Glacier?
- Nepal’s longest glacier. 36 kilometres. Flows from the flanks of Cho Oyu (8,188m). You walk along its lateral moraine for two days between Machhermo and Gokyo. The glacier’s surface is covered in debris and dotted with small glacial ponds. The scale is difficult to photograph but impossible to forget.
When is the best time?
- Autumn (October-November): clearest skies, most turquoise lakes, most reliable Gokyo Ri sunrise. Spring (March-May): warmer, rhododendron bloom lower down. Winter: spectacular but extremely cold. Avoid the monsoon.
The Final Word
EBC is the destination you tell people about. Gokyo is the destination that changes how you see the Khumbu. The lakes are a color that does not exist at sea level — turquoise created by glacial rock flour suspended in water at 4,750 meters.
The glacier is 36 kilometers long. The sunrise from Gokyo Ri puts four of the world’s six highest peaks in a single frame. And the valley is quiet enough that you can hear the glacier creak.
If you have done EBC, Gokyo is the reason to come back to the Khumbu. If you have not done either, and you care more about color than fame, Gokyo is the trek. Tell us your dates.
