EBC has the name. Everest is Everest. But ABC offers a better luxury trekking experience for guests who are not fixated on standing at the foot of the world’s highest peak. Lower altitude means less physiological stress, fewer AMS risks, warmer nights, and better sleep.
More luxury lodges at lower elevations means more of the trek is spent in genuine comfort. The Sanctuary amphitheater is visually more immersive than the EBC moraine. And the Gurung villages along the route provide a richer cultural texture than the Khumbu’s heavily trafficked trails.

The descent from ABC to Pokhara on foot takes 2-3 days. The helicopter takes 25-30 minutes. Cost: $499- $ 950 per person (shared) or $2,000- $ 3,200 (private charter for a couple). We recommend the helicopter return for every luxury guest. It eliminates the knee-punishing descent, saves 2-3 days, and provides aerial views of the Sanctuary that trekkers on foot never see.
The Luxury Lodge Network
Ker & Downey Annapurna Circuit (Lower Elevations)
The American luxury outfitter’s lodge network. Properties at Birethanti (1,097m), Majgaon (1,408m), Tomijong (1,432m), Landruk (1,639m), Dhampus (1,740m), and Ghandruk (1,981m). Separated by half-day walks. En-suite bathrooms. Hot showers. Hot water bottles in beds nightly. Down jackets provided. Complimentary massages at select lodges. Organic farm-to-table meals. Guided by local Gurkhas with deep regional knowledge. This is the luxury infrastructure that makes the lower portion of the trek feel more like a lodge-to-lodge walking holiday than a physical endurance test.
Above 2,000m: What Changes
Above Chhomrong, the Ker & Downey network ends. Accommodation shifts to upgraded teahouses and private arrangements. Rooms are still private with attached bathrooms, but the amenities are simpler: thicker quilts, gas heaters, dining rooms with wood-burning stoves.
The food is still prepared by our dedicated cook team using fresh ingredients, sourced daily. The luxury at higher elevations is not in the fixtures — it is in the private guide, the porter team, the daily medical monitoring, and the knowledge that a helicopter can extract you within two hours if needed.
The Gurung Cultural Thread
The Annapurna trail passes through Gurung territory. The Gurung people are indigenous to these foothills and have a distinct cultural identity: their own language, architecture (round stone houses with slate roofs), dances, and relationship with the mountains. At Ghandruk, guests witness traditional Gurung celebrations with music and dance.
At Landruk, the nearby cliff faces host traditional honey-hunting expeditions — men climbing sheer rock on bamboo ladders to harvest honeycombs from wild Himalayan cliff bees. The cultural texture along the ABC route is richer and more varied than the Khumbu because the Gurung villages are larger, more architecturally distinct, and less commercialized by tourism.
We arrange private village visits, shared meals with Gurung families, and guided walks through terraced farmland where rice, millet, and wheat are cultivated using methods unchanged for centuries. At Birethanti, families can experience white-water rafting on the nearby Seti River as a rest-day activity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the ABC luxury trek?
- Moderate. 5-7 hours of walking per day on well-maintained trails. Porters carry everything except your daypack. The altitude gain is gradual. The maximum is 4,130m — over 1,200m lower than EBC. Guests in reasonable fitness who walk regularly can complete this trek. The helicopter's return eliminates the descent.
How much does a luxury ABC trek cost?
- $2,500-3,500/person for a 10-day luxury trek with Ker & Downey lodges at lower elevations, private guide (1:4 ratio), porters, and all meals. $3,500-4,500/person with helicopter return from ABC to Pokhara. 20-40% cheaper than the equivalent EBC luxury trek.
What is the Annapurna Sanctuary?
- A natural glacial amphitheater at 4,130m surrounded by peaks on all sides: Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna II, III, IV, Machhapuchhre (6,993m), Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Tent Peak. You stand inside the mountains, not looking at them from a distance. 360-degree panorama. Avalanche sounds can be heard from the upper glaciers.
Is the helicopter return worth it?
- Yes. The descent from ABC takes 2-3 days of knee-punishing downhill. The helicopter takes 25-30 minutes. Cost: $499-950/person shared, $2,000-3,200 private charter. It saves 2-3 days, eliminates the risk of injury, and provides aerial Sanctuary views. We recommend it for every luxury guest.
What are the Ker & Downey lodges like?
- Properties at 1,097-1,981m. En-suite bathrooms. Hot showers. Hot water bottles are placed in beds nightly. Down jackets provided. Complimentary massages at select lodges. Organic farm-to-table meals. Guided by local Gurkhas. Separated by half-day walks. The most comfortable lower-altitude trek infrastructure in Nepal.
Can seniors do this trek?
- Fit seniors aged 50-65 can complete the full ABC trek with luxury pacing (rest days at Ghandruk and Chhomrong). Seniors 65+ should consider only the Ker & Downey Annapurna foothills circuit (max 2,000m; half-day walks) and see the Sanctuary by helicopter from Pokhara ($499/person).
Is ABC suitable for families?
- Children aged 10+ with pediatrician clearance can attempt the full trek. Children 6-9 can do the lower Ker & Downey circuit (max 2,000m). The Gurung villages, honey-hunting cliffs, and the river at Birethanti are engaging for children. We adjust daily distances for the youngest trekker.
How does ABC compare to EBC in terms of luxury?
- ABC: shorter (7-10 days), lower (4,130m), warmer, more lodge options below 2,000m, richer cultural variety (Gurung villages), 20-40% cheaper. EBC: higher profile name, Everest views, Sherpa culture, more lodge options above 3,000m (MLN network). ABC is the better luxury trek. EBC is the more famous one.
What permits do I need?
- ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit): $30. TIMS card: $15- $ 25. Both were arranged by us before departure. No restricted area permits required. No minimum group size. Solo trekkers welcome with a guide.
When is the best time?
- Autumn (October-November): clearest views, best helicopter reliability. Spring (March-May): rhododendron bloom, warmer, slightly more afternoon cloud. Both seasons work. Avoid the monsoon (June-September).
The Final Word
Everest has the name. Annapurna has the experience. The Sanctuary amphitheater does not have a view of the mountains. It is an immersion in the mountains. You are surrounded on every side by peaks that exceed 7,000 meters.
The glaciers are close enough that you hear them calve. The sunrise does not light up one mountain — it lights up every wall of the amphitheater in sequence, glacier by glacier, summit by summit. And the trail that brought you here passed through rhododendron forests, Gurung villages, honey-hunting cliffs, and luxury lodges with hot showers and heated beds.
The helicopter lifts you out the next morning. Twenty-five minutes later, you are in Pokhara, at the spa, at the pool, at the lakeside restaurant. The Sanctuary is behind you. The photograph is on your phone. The memory is in your legs, your lungs, and your eyes. Tell us your dates.
