The Seven Treks
1. Poon Hill — 5 Days from Pokhara
The definitive short luxury trek. Five days, including travel from Pokhara. You climb 3,300 stone steps from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri on Day 2 (the hardest section), walk through dense rhododendron forest to Ghorepani, and wake at 3:30 AM on Day 3 for the 45-minute climb to Poon Hill (3,210m).
The sunrise illuminates Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I through IV, Machhapuchhre, and Manaslu for over 20 minutes. You descend through Ghandruk — a Gurung village with momo dinners and traditional dance under starlit skies.
Lodges: Ker & Downey properties at Birethanti (1,097m) and Ghandruk (1,981m) provide en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, hot water bottles in beds, down jackets, and complimentary massages.
Ghorepani (2,860m) is an upgraded teahouse with a private room, a gas heater, and our cook team. Helicopter bypass available for the Tikhedhunga stairway ($300- $ 500 per person). The trek that makes people come back for longer ones.
2. Mardi Himal — 4-5 Days from Pokhara
The hidden ridgeline. You walk above the clouds on a narrow grass spine with Machhapuchhre’s south face directly in front of you. Opened in 2012 and still receives a fraction of Poon Hill’s traffic. Maximum altitude 4,500m at the viewpoint.
The sunrise turns Machhapuchhre gold while the cloud inversion fills the valley below. Basic teahouse accommodation — we compensate with a dedicated cook team, premium sleeping bags (-20°C), and hot water bottles.
Luxury mobile camp option at High Camp for full comfort. Not for first-timers or families under 12. For photographers and solitude seekers who accept modest lodging for extraordinary views.
3. Annapurna Foothills / Ker & Downey Circuit — 3-4 Days from Pokhara
The most comfortable short trek in Nepal. Ker & Downey lodges at Birethanti (1,097m), Majgaon (1,408m), Tomijong (1,432m), Landruk (1,639m), Dhampus (1,740m), and Ghandruk (1,981m). You choose 3 or 4 of these depending on your days and pace.
Half-day walks through terraced rice paddies, rhododendron forest, and Gurung villages. Maximum altitude 1,981m — zero altitude risk. Every lodge has en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, organic farm-to-table meals, and hot water bottles.
Down jackets provided. Complimentary massages at select lodges. This is the trek for families with children 6+, seniors 50-65, and anyone who wants the Himalayas without the physical toll.
4. Australian Camp — 2 Days from Pokhara
The shortest Himalayan overnight. Drive from Pokhara to the trailhead at Kande (45 minutes). Walk uphill through the forest for 2 hours to Australian Camp (2,060m) — a ridge clearing with direct views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South.
Stay overnight at a mountain lodge. Watch the sunrise and sunset from the same viewpoint. Walk down the next morning. Back in Pokhara for lunch. The name comes from an Australian expedition that used the clearing as a base camp.
The trek requires minimal fitness and provides maximum visual return per hour of effort. Lodge accommodation is mid-range (private room, attached bathroom, basic heating). We enhance with our cook team for dinner and breakfast.
5. Dhampus — 2 Days from Pokhara
The most luxurious overnight trek. Drive from Pokhara to Phedi (30 minutes). Walk uphill for 2-3 hours through terraced farmland and scattered Gurung houses to Dhampus (1,740m). The Ker & Downey Dhampus Lodge sits on grassy terraces with a sweeping Annapurna panorama: Annapurna I through IV and Annapurna South. The lodge is solar-powered.
You receive a sunset foot massage with Nepali chiya (sweet milky tea) on the terrace while the mountains change color. En-suite bathroom. Hot shower. Hot water bottle in bed. Organic dinner. Sunrise from bed. Walk down the next morning. The trek for couples who want one night of mountain luxury without any real physical demand.
6. Chisapani-Nagarkot — 3 Days from Kathmandu
The only multi-day trek that starts directly from the Kathmandu Valley without requiring a flight or a long drive. Drive to Sundarijal (45 minutes from Thamel). Enter Shivapuri National Park. Walk through dense forest past waterfalls to Chisapani (2,215m) — a ridge settlement with an Everest panorama.
Day 2: walk along the valley rim through Tamang villages and terraced farmland. Day 3: descend to Nagarkot (2,175m) for a final sunrise, then drive to Bhaktapur or the airport. The trek never exceeds 2,300m.
Lodges are basic-to-mid-range (private rooms with attached bathrooms at Chisapani; Nagarkot has Kavya Himalayas as the luxury option for the final night). We arrange a packed lunch for each trail day.
Three days of gentle walking through the landscape that rings the capital, finishing with the widest Himalayan sunrise accessible by road.
7. Nagarkot to Changu Narayan — 1 Day from Kathmandu
The day hike is covered in our Kathmandu Day Hikes guide. 12 km downhill from Nagarkot (2,175m) to Changu Narayan (1,550m) through terraced farmland and Tamang villages. 3-4 hours walking. Nepal’s oldest temple at the finish.
Vehicle meets you and drives to Bhaktapur for the afternoon. Not a multi-day trek — included here because it is the shortest possible Himalayan walking experience that still delivers mountain views, cultural depth, and a sense of having been on a trail.

SHORT DOES NOT MEAN LESSER
A 2-day walk to Dhampus puts you in a Ker & Downey lodge at 1,740m with a sunset foot massage facing the Annapurna range. A 14-day EBC trek puts you at 5,364m on a grey glacial moraine. Both are valid. Both are Himalayan. The short trek trades altitude and endurance for comfort and efficiency. You see fewer mountains.
You see them better. The photographs are taken from a warm terrace with a cup of tea, not from a windy ridge where your fingers do not work. Short treks exist for people who want to walk in the Himalayas without suffering through them.
Helicopter Alternatives
Every short trek has a helicopter equivalent for travelers who want the views without the walking. Poon Hill: helicopter scenic flight from Pokhara ($449-600/person, land at the viewpoint). Mardi Himal: helicopter scenic flight ($449/person, 1 hour). ABC: helicopter landing at Annapurna Base Camp ($499/person from Pokhara).
Australian Camp and Dhampus: no helicopter needed — the walk is the point. Chisapani: no helicopter option. The helicopter gives you a view. The trek gives you the view, plus the forest, the villages, the trail, and the physical memory of having walked there.
How Short Treks Fit Into Longer Itineraries
In the 7-day Golden Triangle: add Australian Camp or Dhampus (2 days) between Pokhara and Chitwan. No extra flights. No schedule disruption. In the 10-day itinerary, Poon Hill (5 days) replaces 4 Pokhara days.
In the 12-day itinerary, Annapurna Foothills (3-4 days) sits between Dhulikhel wellness and Chitwan. We never build a short trek as a standalone trip. We build it into the Nepal itinerary where it fits, between the surrounding zones.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best short luxury trek in Nepal?
Poon Hill (5 days) for the definitive sunrise. Annapurna Foothills (3-4 days) for maximum comfort. Dhampus (2 days) for couples. Mardi Himal (4-5 days) for photographers. It depends on what you value: sunrise, comfort, romance, or solitude.
What is the easiest luxury trek?
Dhampus (2 days, 1,740m, gentle uphill, Ker & Downey lodge). Or the Annapurna Foothills circuit (3-4 days, max 1,981m, half-day walks, luxury lodges throughout). Both are suitable for families and fit seniors.
Can I do a short trek with children?
Annapurna Foothills: ages 6+. Dhampus: ages 6+. Australian Camp: ages 8+. Poon Hill: ages 8+ (the stairway is hard for smaller children, but a helicopter bypass is available). Mardi Himal: ages 12+ (ridgeline is exposed).
Can I do a short trek as a senior?
Dhampus (2 days): fit seniors of any age. Annapurna Foothills (3-4 days): fit seniors 50-65. Nagarkot-Changu Narayan (1 day, downhill): all ages. Poon Hill (5 days): fit seniors 50-60 with helicopter stairway bypass. Chisapani-Nagarkot (3 days): fit seniors 50-65.
How much does a short luxury trek cost?
Nagarkot-Changu Narayan: $80-150 (day hike). Australian Camp: $400-800 (2 days). Dhampus: $500-900 (2 days). Chisapani-Nagarkot: $600-1,200 (3 days). Annapurna Foothills: $1,500-2,500 (3-4 days). Poon Hill: $1,800-3,000 (5 days). Mardi Himal: $2,000-3,500 (4-5 days). All include a private guide, porters, accommodation, and meals.
What is Australian Camp?
A ridge clearing at 2,060m above Pokhara. Named after an Australian expedition base camp. 2-hour uphill walk from Kande. Direct views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South. Overnight at a mountain lodge. Sunset and sunrise from the same viewpoint. The shortest Himalayan overnight.
What is the Ker & Downey lodge network?
An American luxury outfitter’s circuit of lodges in the Annapurna foothills. Properties at 1,097m to 1,981m. En-suite bathrooms. Hot showers. Hot water bottles. Down jackets. Organic meals. Complimentary massages. Separated by half-day walks. The most comfortable trekking infrastructure in Nepal.
Do I need the Poon Hill trek if I am doing the EBC helicopter?
They are different experiences. The helicopter gives you altitude and Everest. The Poon Hill trek offers walking, forests, culture, and a sunrise panorama from a hilltop you reach on your own. Many of our 10-day itineraries include both the helicopter Everest on Day 3 and the Poon Hill trek on Days 4-8.
When is the best time for short treks?
October-November: clearest views, most reliable sunrise, best Poon Hill and Mardi conditions. March-April: rhododendron bloom on Poon Hill and Mardi trails — the forest becomes a corridor of color. The Ker & Downey foothills circuit works year-round except during the monsoon. Chisapani-Nagarkot works October-April.
Can I add a short trek to a 7-day itinerary?
Yes. Australian Camp or Dhampus (2 days) fits between Pokhara and Chitwan in the 7-day Golden Triangle without adding extra flights or disrupting the schedule. You land in Pokhara, trek for 2 days, and fly to Chitwan from Pokhara on Day 5.
The Final Word
A short trek is not a diluted long trek. It is a different format. Dhampus gives you one night in a luxury lodge at 1,740 meters with a sunset foot massage facing the Annapurna range. Poon Hill gives you five days of rhododendron forest, stone stairways, Gurung villages, and the most complete sunrise panorama in the Himalayas.
Australian Camp gives you the shortest possible route from a car to a Himalayan viewpoint where you sleep overnight and watch the mountain light change twice — sunset and sunrise — from the same chair.
None of these requires you to carry a pack, sleep in a sleeping bag, or eat instant noodles. All of them put their feet on the Himalayan soil. The mountain is the same mountain whether you spend two days or fourteen.
The difference is how much trail you want under your boots before you see it. Tell us how many days you have, and we will match you to the right trek.
