Nepal’s Best Short Trek
What You See From Poon Hill
Poon Hill (3,210m) is not a mountain. It is a viewpoint — a hilltop above the village of Ghorepani that provides a 360-degree panorama of the western Himalayan chain. The viewing platform faces north and east. What you see, left to right: Dhaulagiri I (8,167m, the world’s 7th highest). Tukuche Peak.
Nilgiri. Annapurna I (8,091m, the 10th highest). Annapurna South (7,219m). Hiunchuli (6,441m). Machhapuchhre/Fishtail (6,993m). And to the east: Manaslu (8,163m) and the Ganesh Himal range. On a clear morning, you see five peaks above 7,000 meters and two above 8,000 meters. No other viewpoint in Nepal offers this breadth of panorama at this low an altitude with this little effort.

Day 2 includes 3,300 stone steps from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri. This is the most physically demanding section of the entire trek. There is no way around it. At a luxury pace, it takes 2-3 hours with multiple rest stops. Porters carry everything except your daypack. The guide sets a pace matched to the slowest member. For guests who cannot manage the stairs, we offer a helicopter flight from Pokhara directly to Ghorepani — bypassing the stairway entirely and arriving at the village in 20 minutes.
The Lodges
The Ker & Downey lodge network covers Birethanti (1,097m), Majgaon (1,408m), Landruk (1,639m), Dhampus (1,740m), and Ghandruk (1,981m). En-suite bathrooms. Hot showers. Hot water bottles in beds. Down jackets provided. Complimentary massages at select lodges. Organic farm-to-table meals.
At Ghorepani itself (2,860m), accommodation is upgraded to teahouse standard — private rooms with attached bathrooms, gas heaters, thick quilts, and dining by a wood-burning stove. Above the Ker & Downey network, the luxury shifts from fixtures to service: a private guide, a porter team, a dedicated cook, and the security of a helicopter extraction plan.
The Rhododendron Season
March to mid-April. Nepal’s national flower. The forests between Tikhedhunga and Ghorepani erupt into cascading walls of red, pink, and white bloom. The trail becomes a corridor of color. At 2,500-3,000 meters, the trees are 10-15 meters tall, and the canopy closes overhead. This is the single most photographed trekking environment in Nepal. If your dates are flexible, book the Poon Hill trek for late March or early April. The bloom transforms the experience from a mountain trek into a botanical spectacle.

The Final Word
Twenty minutes. That is how long it takes for the sunrise to travel across the Himalayan chain from Dhaulagiri to Manaslu. You stand at 3,210 meters in a down jacket, your breath visible, your hands wrapped around a thermos of hot tea that your guide carried up the hill. The mountains turn orange one by one. The valley below is still dark. You are above the clouds and inside the light at the same time.
