2. Insurance: Your Standard Policy Is Void Above 3,000m
Most travel insurance — even policies marketed as “adventure” coverage — contains explicit altitude exclusions above 2,000-3,000 meters. Everest Base Camp is at 5,364m. Even moderate Annapurna lodges routinely exceed 3,000m. Standard coverage is catastrophically inadequate.
Global Rescue offers a High-Altitude Evacuation Package: $495 for an individual, $995 for a family. They deploy medical and rescue personnel directly in Nepal during peak seasons.
Without specialized coverage, a private helicopter evacuation costs $2,000-$6,500 per hour, potentially reaching $300,000 in total. Helicopters require pre-approval from insurers or large credit card holds before engines start. The Nepalese government will not issue RAPs without verified helicopter evacuation coverage.
3. Packing: Technical Performance Meets Lodge Elegance
You may experience 35°C subtropical heat in Chitwan and sub-zero alpine wind at an Everest lodge within 48 hours. The system is modular.
Footwear: broken-in Gore-Tex hiking boots for trail. Lightweight running shoes for village walks. Premium sport sandals for lodge evenings and safari boats. Layering: yak wool thermals (base), packable down jacket (mid), windproof fleece, long-sleeved UV shirts.
Outer shell: waterproof breathable hard-shell jacket and trekking pants. Accessories: UV category 3-4 polarised sunglasses (non-negotiable at altitude), microfiber neck buff, wide-brimmed sun hat, warm beanie, high-SPF lip balm. Medical: Diamox (if prescribed), electrolyte crystals, Imodium, Ibuprofen, nausea medication, bandages, UV water purifier or purification tablets.
Sony Alpha 7R V or 7C II: full-frame in a compact, weather-sealed body. Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II: eliminates the need for multiple prime lenses. Peak Design Travel Tripod: carbon fiber, stable in wind. DJI Mini 4 Pro: under 250g, aids drone regulation compliance. Sealed dry bags for rain. Apple AirTags for luggage tracked across porter handoffs. Carry spare batteries in your jacket — cold kills lithium-ion batteries.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my travel insurance cover high-altitude trekking?
Almost certainly not above 3,000m. Most policies — even “adventure” ones — contain explicit altitude exclusions. You need specialized high-altitude evacuation coverage (Global Rescue: $495 individual, $995 family). Without it, a helicopter evacuation costs $2,000-$6,500 per hour.
What permits do I need for Upper Mustang?
Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit ($500 first 10 days + $50/day), Annapurna Conservation Area Permit ($30), and TIMS ($15-25). All arranged through a licensed trekking agency. We handle the entire permit chain.
What camera should I bring?
Sony Alpha 7R V or 7C II (full-frame, compact, weather-sealed) with Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. Peak Design carbon fiber travel tripod. DJI Mini 4 Pro drone (under 250 g). Carry spare batteries inside your jacket — cold kills lithium-ion rapidly above 4,000m.
How much does VIP airport arrival cost?
$150/person for a single executive, $140 per person for couples, $130 per person for groups of 4-6. Includes personal greeter, visa assistance, CIP lounge access, luggage porterage, and escort to a private vehicle.
What vehicle do you use for ground transport?
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. 4WD. 220mm ground clearance. Professional English-speaking chauffeur. NPR 35,000/day (~$260) within Kathmandu Valley, inclusive of fuel and driver. Handles everything from city traffic to Chitwan mud tracks.
How much does an Everest helicopter charter cost?
Private EBC with Kala Patthar landing: $5,000-6,500. EBC + Gokyo Lakes: $6,000-7,000+. Annapurna Base Camp: $2,000-2,500. KTM-to-Pokhara transit: $2,000- $ 2,500. Upper Mustang tour: $5,000+.
How much should I tip my trekking guide?
Lead guide: $10-$15/day. Porter: $5- $ 10/day (hand-delivered directly to each porter). Assistant guide: $5-15/day. Hotel bellhops: NPR 50-200/bag. Driver: 5-10% of fare. Tip in Rupees or clean US Dollars at the end of the service.
What should I pack for layering?
Base: yak wool thermals. Mid: packable down jacket + windproof fleece. Outer: waterproof, breathable, hard-shell jacket and trekking pants. Accessories: UV category 3-4 polarised sunglasses, neck buff, beanie, high-SPF lip balm. Footwear: Gore-Tex hiking boots, running shoes, sport sandals.
Do I need a drone permit?
Nepal requires drone permits, which are difficult for tourists to obtain. The DJI Mini 4 Pro (under 250g) falls into a lighter regulatory category in many jurisdictions. Check current Nepalese Civil Aviation Authority regulations before departure. We advise on the latest rules during pre-trip briefing.
How far in advance should I book?
4-6 months for standard luxury itineraries. 6-9 months for peak festival season (Dashain, Tihar) or limited-inventory properties (Shinta Mani Mustang, Dwarika’s presidential suites, Meghauli Serai villas).
The Final Word
The checklist exists because the details matter. The insurance is void above 3,000m. The battery that dies in the cold. The tip that supports a family through the off-season.
The permit takes weeks to process. The helicopter requires pre-approval before engines start. Handle these before you arrive. Then the only thing you think about in Nepal is Nepal.
We send every guest a personalized version of this checklist calibrated to their specific itinerary. Tell us your dates, and we will build yours.
